Cleaning Access
If the rear glass surface is not accessible via an adjacent opening unit, the glass must be removed to allow cleaning.
Cleaning
The cleaning cycle will be dictated by local conditions and should consist of washing down the glass and aluminium with a non alkaline detergent in warm water using a soft cloth. For more stubborn marks on the aluminium a soft brush or nylon pad should be used. Avoid abrasive cleaners, steel wool, strong acids or alkalis. After cleaning it is advisable to rinse the surfaces with clean water and then wipe dry. Chips or scratches in a paint finish can be touched in using a matching non cellulose paint. Repair of anodised finishes is not practical other than by touching in with a colour matched paint but the finished appearance is seldom complementary.
Glass Removal
A full risk assessment must first be made. The glass is held in place by aluminium beads and a vinyl wedge gasket. This is generally jointed at the middle of the top bead. Insert a flat blade such as a putty knife between the vinyl gasket and the aluminium bead at this point and using a gentle rocking action, lever the vinyl out a short distance. Carefully peel the gasket out taking care at the corners where it has been partly cut to allow the turn. The vertical aluminium beads can be removed by pushing them towards the glass allowing them to disengage from the frame. Hold the glass in place and remove the top bead. Allow the glass to tilt inwards and then lift it off the plastic seating blocks in the bottom frame and over the bottom bead which need not be removed. A glass suction pad may be needed to assist in the removal of larger panes. When the glass has been cleaned it must be lifted back onto the seating blocks. Clip in the top bead and then the two vertical beads. Insert the vinyl gasket starting at a top corner. "Dress" the shoulder of the gasket on to the aluminium bead using a flat pointed object (see diagram).
Re-glazing
Obtain a new piece of glass after establishing size, thickness and type and then proceed as described in "Glass Removal". Dress shoulder of gasket
