When Associated Newspapers, publishers of the Daily Mail, decided to refurbish their offices at Northcliffe House (above what used to be the Barkers of Kensington department store), the challenge was to provide an energy efficient, contemporary working environment, addressing heat loss, solar gain and insulation from the noise generated from the hustle and bustle of the world famous fashion shopping mecca, Kensington High Street. At the same time, preserving this famous building’s breath-taking listed art deco facade, with its 2.5metre high monumental windows.
Working closely with architects Simons Design; contractors Simons Construction and consultants Fain Redfern, secondary glazing specialists Selectaglaze developed a casement window based on their existing Series 50 heavy duty unit with an extended bead to accept a “Part L” compliant sealed unit. The glazing combined one pane of Ecolite glass for solar control together with one of 6mm low emissivity Softcoat, to minimise heat loss. And a 200mm gap between the original monumental steel windows and the secondary installation ensured the most effective noise control, while leaving the sight lines completely unaffected. A total of 88 units were installed in a combination of single and coupled formats. Images to follow.
